A 6 year old boy presents with a 3 day history of a runny nose and left sided ear ache which started 24 hours ago. On examination, his temperature is 38.2°C, his respiratory rate is 19 breaths per minute, his pulse is 90 beats per minute, and his oxygen saturations are 99%. His right ear appears normal but the left tympanic membrane is red and inflamed. The ear canal and external ear are normal and there is no discharge. He has no other medical conditions.
