Tom is a four year old boy who you saw four days ago with erythema migrans which developed after a camping holiday in the Peak district. You made a clinical diagnosis of Lyme disease and gave him a prescription for Amoxicillin 250mg TDS. His mother Rachel has brought him back to the GP as she is finding it very difficult to administer the medication. Tom has severe learning difficulties and either gets very aggressive or upset when his mother tries to give him the medication, so has had at most half of the current prescribed medication. She is concerned that she won’t be able to continue giving this for 14 days so would like an alternative. You discuss alternative antibiotic choices with the on call infectious diseases consultant.
