Lucy is a 4 year old girl who has been brought to see you by her mother Jessica. Jessica informs you that Lucy has been unwell for the last three days, initially with a sore throat and coryzal symptoms, but in the last 24 hours has also developed a cough. Lucy has been eating/drinking and playing as normal. Lucy’s older sister Clara had a similar illness about a month ago. She is normally fit and well, up to date with immunisations and meeting developmental milestones. On examination, Lucy appears happy and is playing with toys in the consulting room. Observations are normal and there is no evidence of respiratory distress. Auscultation of Lucy’s chest reveals normal breath sounds and you note a barking cough.
