Miss Plank is a 32 year old female you have been investigating for abdominal symptoms thought to be related to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Her symptoms have markedly improved with dietary changes. During one of her initial consultations an abdominal ultrasound scan was requested and you have just received the report. It is normal, except a 2cm simple cyst on the right ovary. Apart from a new diagnosis of IBS, Miss Plank has no significant medical history, is on no regular medication and has no children. Family history is unremarkable. She is a non-smoker and drinks four units of alcohol most weeks. You call Miss Plank to discuss her scan results and she asks about the possible treatment options.
